Customer Reviews

Need to have Mac OS 10.5 or higher
Despite the information on Amazon stating that this product is compatible with OS 10.4.11 it is not. When attempting to install the software I received a message that it could not be installed. After contacting Neat's customer service via email (the only available option) I received a download for an older version. After downloading and installing the older version I plugged in the scanner only to have the computer unable to see the scanner. After another email to Neat and waiting 2 days for an answer due to a weekend I was notified that this scanner is not compatible with the old software and I would have to upgrade my operating system. I would have thought they could have told me that in the first customer support email where I clearly stated which scanner and operating system I had.

At a cost of 0 I upgraded my operating system to Snow Leopard (which I had wanted to eventually do for other reasons this just made me do it sooner). After the upgrade and installing the supplied Neat software I could see the scanner. However it was ignoring the sales tax part of the receipts. After reading comments I realized I had to download the software update. After downloading the update be aware you need to turn off the scanner and restart the computer otherwise it will scan receipts but not documents.

Now that I have it all working I do like the scanner. I just wish Amazon had not shown it to be compatible with OS 10.4.11 which would have saved a lot of frustration.

Get Organized!
Setup is fast and easy. It consists of a software package and a simple stick-scanner. The software is what you're really buying here, the scanner is competent but it's a bit quirky. It scans your receipts and creates one of three files: contact, document or a receipt. If it gets it wrong you simply select the field and change it to what class it fits in. It gets it right most of the time. The scanner is a little slow but that's also because each scan is processed for OCR, and rotated or straightened. If the receipt goes in really crooked you will have to rescan it, which happens about 25% of the time, however it's not a deal breaker. If you're a Mac user and are trying to clean up your paper clutter this thing is great.
Pros: Inexpensive, cleans up stacks of paperwork, calculates receipt totals, makes you feel like you're in control.
Cons: Can't dump a box of wrinkled receipts into a big hopper and just walk away, you have to scan them one at a time.
Caution: It stores all of your receipts in a database file. Databases are notorious for corrupting, so to be safe, do a manual backup of the database every now and then, in addition to the Time-machine backup. You wouldn't want to invest your time to be organized and then loose it all.

When it breaks down you are screwed even if bought through amazon
I bought this product through amazon and at first I was very excited about the scanner. I own the scansnap mac scanner and thought this would be great idea when on the road. It works slowly, but it used to deliver. Suddenly the scans got darker, not as accurate and it was time to call technical support. As stated by other reviewers, there IS NO TECH SUPPORT and one must rely on a bb, or email, that takes 48 hours at a minimum to respond to the emails with no visible solution.

Don't waste your money in this product that looks nice, feels nice, and seems to work well. It doesn't. And while they spent a lot of money in marketing, they've failed to provide competitive customer service.

Great Size, but mostly unusable
It's nice to have a scanner this size for travel, but it isn't as handy as I had expected. Problems:
1. Locked into using their software to do any scans. They don't allow the scanner to be accessed by other applications.
2. Scanning to a PDF should be a much simpler process
3. I forgive the poor scan quality because of the size
4. Scans each page as it's own file. You have to merge multiple pages together later.

Due to the above reasons I don't use this scanner. I save the paper until I get to the office and use my Fujitsu Scan Snap (Which I love)

After 2 years of beta I give up on this product
I bought this as the adv release in 2008 and gave up on this product a couple of months ago (April 2010). I had high hopes and I faithly defended Neat as a work in progress. Well there is nothing neat about the Mac version. It has major flaws. I only wrote this review after purchasing and using a scan snap and realizing there are quality scanners.

So on to my complaints:
-The application as of version 3 is still terribly unstable and I was constantly having to re-index my data.
-Crashes are common
-Scanning is slow.
-Can only scan one side with the mobile scanner
-The design of the scanner is such that if you have a jam, you are guaranteed to have to run the alcohol cloth thru many times. Unlike my scansnap which opens up so I don't have to jerk paper thru it.
-Processing text recognition is slow
-Auto correction for misalignment is limited
-The software is set up to lock you into the product. True you can export the pdf's but it's painful. I have slowly been doing it for months, as I transition from Neat to just folders in OS X.
-The scanned files are enormous in size which makes the whole applications data file very large. Two years of scanning for me left me with like a 3-4 GB data file and most of my scans were in black and white. My scansnap cranks out a color statement with text recognition equaling about 220 KB (which is on the large size for the scansnap) while the same file in Neat Works is about 2-3 MB. It's ridiculous.
-You can not search the pdf files outside of the application using spotlight, you have to open the program and search inside Neat Works. In my opinion it's as if the people at Neat built the application to lock users into it. Sacrificing functionality for the ball and chain. What Neat Works does is create meta files for the pdf's and image files, then tucks the real pdf somewhere un-searchable and gives it a 50 character encrypted file name. I suppose the meta data file has this coded name tied to it. And if you do find the pdfs there unusable anyway because of the file name (MEOCMEIVI-230480985-QMJENIVJJ-ZLEPFNWIVJ-MDOVJ38VNEI for example).

Now I own a scansnap S1300 and I couldn't be happier. The scan snap along with a logical folder system in Mac OS X is the way to go for me. With the speed, quality and features of the scan snap I can knock out 2 months of statements and receipts in the same amount of time it took to do 2 weeks worth of docs and receipts using Neat Works. And it's not just to blame the scanner, the application is slow too.
