Excellent with the new IMAC. Converted all old pics to digital
I love this scanner. I used it with the new IMAC and used the scanner software then brought the pics into iphoto. I had over a thousand pics that I converted to digital and didnt have a single problem. The nice this is you can place 4 4x6 pics on the screen and scan once but iphoto placed them in pics individually. So this project only took a 1/4th of the time. It did the job well. would buy again and highly recommend.

If you own a Windows PC, you can expect the usual problems.
For me, I switched from PC to Mac. The setup took under 10 minutes and it works flawlessly. Windows PC's are a different critter. I have two and I own a company that has over 50 Windows PC's. If you are into Windows, expect the usual problems, complications, and headaches. (Buy big bottles of aspirin.) That is life in the WWW (Wonderful World of Windows). However, this scanner is remarkable - particularly with slides - when used on a Mac. I even use it for professional advertising work. My wife is an accomplished artist. I use this for all her work. We used to use a Canon 4200F on a Windows PC. Forget it. This is a new world.

Easy & clarity is good
The was my first experience with scanners so I researched and based my decision on other reviews - glad that I did. It is super easy to use. My husband & I were both amazed at how clearly it scans the pictures. I am having a great time scanning old photos and sharing them with friends. I am also pleased that I will now be able to store them safely and not worry about the really old hard copies diminishing in color any further.

A few caveats
I had an old HP scanner that wouldn't work with XP, so I bought this one, unaware of a few things I wish I'd known. I've used it only a couple of times, for reasons that should become clear.
I don't use a scanner often, and when I do, it's usually for sending faxes, making pdfs, and, once in a while, OCR. My old HP scanner had a button for faxing, but this one doesn't, which I didn't notice when buying it. Looking at other scanners, I see they typically no longer have a fax button--if you want to fax, you need to buy a multifunction machine (which is what I ultimately did).
When I first tried making a pdf it worked okay, but later, a pdf it made was poor quality. Couldn't figure out why. Also, if you pdf a multipage document, you can't easily add pages after the first one (at least I couldn't). My old HP software had a dialog box that asked if you wanted to do this--you put the new page on the scanner, clicked Yes, and that was it. On this one, you have to select "PDF (Add Page)." When I did, I got an error message saying it couldn't add pages to pdfs created by other applications (which this wasn't). Maybe there's a way around this, but I wasn't interested in fooling with it long enough to find out.
I also tried saving a doc as OCR, and the only options it gave me were as a bitmap or a tiff ... not exactly OCR choices. Also, if you succeed, the documentation says you can save only to Notepad. My old HP software let me save to Word.
In general, the software isn't terribly efficient. It seems to require a lot of unnecessary clicking to get things done. Maybe it would be possible to save some steps if one took the time to look into it. I finally concluded that for a little more money, I could buy a multifunction that would let me fax, scan, and copy without my computer even being on, and would also print. I had stayed away from these, because I'd read that if one function breaks, it's hard or expensive to fix and essentially requires buying a new machine. But considering the price (you can get a decent one for under 0) and the jobs I needed it to do, I concluded that that was my best option.

Poor Tech Support
I received the scanner and installed the software package and drivers, but when I tried to use it the software wouldn't run correctly. I am using Windows 7 (x64) so this was not unexpected. However, after I downloaded the software and drivers from their website, the scanner still wouldn't work and the software had stop errors as soon as I tried to load. After going back and forth with Canon tech support for over a week and not making any progress, I returned this product. It may be o.k. with XP or Vista, but I wouldn't strongly recommend Windows 7 users to avoid this product.
